چکیده

Efficiency in a Matching Model with Heterogeneous Agents: Too Many Good or Bad Jobs? This paper analyses the efficiency of the equilibrium allocation in a matching model with two types of workers and jobs. The basic assumption is that high-skill workers can perform both skilled and unskilled jobs, while low-skill workers can only perform unskilled jobs. Our first result shows that the equilibrium with ex-post bargaining is never efficient. Second, under Hosios’ (1990) condition we show that high-skill workers are under-valued in equilibrium, while the opposite holds for low-skill workers. Firms therefore tend to create too few unskilled jobs, resulting in a suboptimally high unemployment rate for low-skill workers. We show that these results generalize to environments with more types of agents and different production technologies. Finally, in an extension we derive a tax scheme that restores efficiency and we show how workers’ bargaining strength affects unemployment and skill-mismatch. JEL Classification: C78, D61, J64

Strategic Experimentation with Heterogeneous Agents and Payoff Externalities

In this paper, I examine the effect of introducing heterogeneity between players in models of strategic experimentation. I consider a two-armed bandit problem with one safe arm and a risky arm. There are two players and each has an access to such a bandit. A player using the safe arm experiences a safe flow payoff . The risky arm can either be good or bad. A bad risky arm is worse than the safe...

Good Jobs, Bad Jobs: What’s Trade Got To Do With It?

Exploiting data on US local labor markets between 1990 and 2010, we analyze the heterogeneous impact of rising import penetration on employment growth of ‘good’and ‘bad’jobs. Three salient findings emerge. First, job polarization —defined as an increase in good and bad jobs and a decrease in middle quality jobs —occurred over this time period in US local labor markets, but is not due to local t...

Book Abstract: How to Write an Emergency Plan by David Alexander; Reproduced by Permission

In 2002, David Alexander wrote Principles of Emergency Planning and Management. Long a standard reference work in that book he described the processes of preparing for and responding to disasters, crises, and civil contingencies. He based the work on principles because he wanted to dissociate it from any particular system of emergency management. Then, as now, many books in this subject are tie...

In this article, we analyzed the efficiency of food and beverage companies that were accepted in stock market, using a nonlinear model. This model eliminates the weak points of base Data Envelopment Models in high computing, lack of integration and too many numbers of zero weights. Taking into account that in this study we developed the base Data Envelopment Analysis model, the research method...

Vacation model for Markov machine repair problem with two heterogeneous unreliable servers and threshold recovery

Markov model of multi-component machining system comprising two unreliable heterogeneous servers and mixed type of standby support has been studied. The repair job of broken down machines is done on the basis of bi-level threshold policy for the activation of the servers. The server returns back to render repair job when the pre-specified workload of failed machines is build up. The first (seco...
